About Fabio modica
Born in Catania, Sicily, in 1978, Fabio Modica is a contemporary artist whose journey through artistic evolution reflects a profound exploration of form, texture, and meaning. Initially rooted in classical Renaissance traditions, Modica’s early works were imbued with the philosophical depth of Greek antiquity and the dramatic chiaroscuro of Caravaggio. However, by 2002, his artistic trajectory shifted dramatically towards a semi-abstract, highly symbolic approach that redefined his visual language.
Modica’s paintings are distinguished by an intricate interplay of realism and abstraction. His signature style emerges from a dynamic fusion of thick, impasto textures, deconstructed figurative elements, and a striking chromatic variance. Working across multiple mediums—including acrylics, watercolors, and mixed media—he integrates volcanic sand and organic materials to create compositions that pulse with energy and material presence.
Modica’s academic background has been instrumental in shaping his artistic vision. He earned a Master’s Degree in History and Preservation of Works of Art from the University of Bologna (Bologna-Ravenna, Italy) between 2003 and 2005. Prior to this, he completed a Master’s Degree in Drawing, Painting, and Trompe l'Oeil Decoration at the prestigious Palazzo Spinelli Fine Art and Restoration Institute in Florence (1999-2003). His foundational education includes a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Art and Restoration from the Nike Academy of Fine Art and Restoration in Catania (2001), where he also undertook specialized training courses in the Restoration of Old Books, Drawings, and Printed Images (2000) and Restoration of Paintings (2001). These formative years provided him with an in-depth understanding of classical and contemporary artistic methodologies, allowing him to develop a distinct and innovative approach to his work.
As an educator, Modica has contributed to the artistic community through his tenure at the Nike Academy of Fine Art and Restoration in Catania. His works have been exhibited extensively across the United States, Japan, China, and Europe, including in prestigious venues such as the MACS Museum (Italy), Art Hamptons (USA), Art Taipei (Taiwan), and Arte in Nuvola (Rome). Currently, he is represented by Johnson Lowe Gallery and Aberson Exhibits in the USA, Whitestone Gallery in Japan and China, and Arionte Contemporary Art in Italy.
Modica’s art continues to challenge the boundaries of expressionism, prompting a visceral response from audiences worldwide. His relentless pursuit of raw emotion, structural deconstruction, and philosophical inquiry makes him one of the most compelling figures in contemporary art today.
